Show 94: The One Where We Call Retcon

October!  So many things; fallen leaves, the nip in the air and it has been a year since Odile attended the Browncoat Ball …

This year it heralds the start of Marian Call’s first ever tour of Europe and we are mighty pleased that she’s coming.  You can find out all about her current schedule at mariancall.com.  Both Odile and I are hoping to make it to at least one performance, and hope that you do too!

Following on from our support of Sean Maher’s web project, “Retcon”, we also spoke with creator, writer and leading lady, Miley Yamamoto, to learn more about the project and what Browncoats can do to continue to support it.

Both interviews are fabulous and Odile and I want to thank both Marian and Miley for getting up early to fit in with us.

As always, we hope you will enjoy the show and if you do, you can leave comments here or on our Facebook page or Twitter.

You can find our podcast on itunes, here is a direct link to our page.

If you use iTunes as your podcatcher, please leave us a review.

Of course you can also download the show directly from here!

Sean Maher – “Retcon” web series

Sean Maher is involved with a new web series called “Retcon” which needs the kind of help that Browncoats are the best in the business at giving!

The series will be a web sci-fi action dramedy created, written, produced and starring Miley Yamamoto.  Besides Sean, it will also star Yuri Lowenthal, who you will best know as the voice of “Ben 10″.

They are on social media and you can keep track of news via their Facebook page,
https://www.facebook.com/WatchRetcon
as well as their Twitter, @WatchRetcon.  You can support this project via Indiegogo at
http://www.indiegogo.com/Retcon?a=1482140
and they have now approx 5 days to reach their goal.  Below is the team’s hilarious pitch video.

And here is a great behind-the-scenes video which I know you’ll also love:

Now you have watched the videos; of course you want Sean to have that triple shot, low-fat latte, so support!

Both Odile and myself, wish all involved every success with this project – we certainly want to see it!

SDCC 2012: The “Firefly” 10th Anniversary Reunion Panel hosted by The Science Channel

This is one of those times when all the superlatives available to me all seem either too twee or just isn’t the right one.  Personally, I am completely overwhelmed by the emotion of the whole panel from half way across the planet.  It was beyond wonderful to see everyone together again and those who couldn’t attend were keenly missed.

Cliqueclack.com were very near the front and posted the entire panel on their website and due to it’s length, this is the link:

BDHs on TV 2012 – 2013

I’ve just been looking back over older blog posts and reread my post about our BDHs on TV for 2011/2012 and thinking about what wasn’t mentioned and how situations change, and what now?

“Chuck” and “The Playboy Club”: when used in any context, “cancelled” is a hugely emotive word, as every Browncoat is aware, but I’m pondering on its use regarding “Chuck”.  I loved this show, watched it from when it started airing in the UK, thought the premise was fun, the cast was excellent, but then it (for me) became bogged down in its own Intersect myth which meant that there was less to do with the Buy More crew which made it less fun.  Personally (and there are going to be a lot of “personally” in this blog!), I think the show was reaching a natural end and at least it reached the magic 100 episodes for it to live on in syndication and I also think that it will be regarded as one of the best-loved series from this time.

“The Playboy Club” marked the return of Sean Maher to our screens.  Personally (told you!), I think that the network made a huge mistake in cancelling this show only after three episodes.  The reason why I say this has less to do with the main story and character emphasis which we were seeing ad infinitum on many other shows, but it was the secondary strands that were making this interesting .  This show was prepared to show the ambitions of a woman of colour to become the first African-American woman to grace the cover of Playboy, and most importantly the gay and lesbian community in Chicago during this time period.   I believe that this show had places to go and things to say, whether or not it would have fulfilled this promise or been renewed at the end of its series is another conversation.

“Castle”/”Suburgatory”: as we know, the network renewed both these shows for another year – I believe for a full season order for each.  I can’t talk about “Suburgatory” as I have still yet to watch any of it and I’m not sure if any UK TV channel has bought it.

“Castle” is, of course, an entirely different story …  Lovely Nathan – knowing that you have continued employment for another year fills me with joy, but we have now hit the awkward era for the show – ah, a dilemma; is this show of interest enough for me to say SPOILER ALERT to our UK readers who are only approaching mid-series four or does everyone know, umm …  Okay, err on the side of caution – we’ve hit a delicate time for the show.  One of the “joys” of “Castle” is that it has, 98% of the time, not tried to be anything it wasn’t.  It remains a relatively light-hearted and “successful” mish-mash of “Jason King”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Remington Steele” and the ubiquitous, “Moonlighting”.  I put the word “successful” in quote marks, because from my interpretation of the Nielsen ratings, it is far from being the “network smash hit” that the fandom wants.  The show has increased its 18 – 49 ratings since its first series, but has levelled out around the 2.3/2.5 mark in its time slot, which makes it nothing more than a solid performer bolstering the network’s overall market share and it cannot stand on its own without the strong lead-in provided by “Dancing With The Stars”.  This is sad, because if ratings were measured by the actual viewing figures, new episodes “Castle” would always be amongst the top 5/6 most watched shows in the US on a Monday night.  The one issue I now have is with the recurring storyline of Beckett’s mother’s murder and how this has expanded from “a street murder” (not implausible!) to a full-grown conspiracy plot which is, at the moment, simply boring and I just can’t understand why creators Rob Bowman and Andrew Marlowe have felt the need to blow this up.  Another niggle I have had this year concerns the petulant behaviour of Richard Castle himself and his relationship with Kate Beckett.  I’m glad that the show has lasted as long as it has, but I also feel that it is coming to a natural close and I can’t help but wonder if the network renewed it more because it has already been sold into syndication and so require the “magic” 100 episodes.  We shall see.

“Homeland”/”The LA Complex”: I have the first series of “Complex” but have still yet to watch it.  However, from Jewel Staite’s tweets, I know that she is hard at work on the second series.  I’m going to be watching this out of curiosity, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I was hooked by “Homeland” and I like Damian Lewis.  I found this to be a powerful drama in the same vein as the Scandinavian/European dramas that we are now being treated to in the UK and is a prime example of how good US TV can be.  I’m pleased that Morena Baccarin is being given the opportunity to show her chops.  I know from Morena’s tweets, production starts shortly on the second series, and I can’t wait to see it.

Just Another Periodical Update …

Know what, I’m going to stop apologising – we’re all busy, right?  We all understand the score, right?

During the past couple of days, the US main TV networks have been announcing their renewals, pick ups and cancellations, so what does that mean for our BDH’s?

As followers of Nathan Fillion’s work and “Castle” fans (“Castillions”) are aware, ABC made the decision to renewal “Castle” for a fifth series in January.  Midweek, last week, Michael Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly, tweeted that it looked like NBC had decided to renew “Chuck” and this was confirmed within forty-eight hours by the network.  They also announced that they were picking up “Playboy”, a drama set around the Chicago Playboy Club in the 60′s in which Sean Maher starred in the pilot and according to Nikki Finke’s “Deadline Hollywood” website, he signed for a recurring role.  Followers of Sean’s Twitter feed (@Sean_M_Maher) will have read that he shot his scenes in Chicago, but no word on whether the show will remain there or relocate back to Los Angeles as “Castle” did.  By Friday, ABC had announced that it was cancelling “V”.

From a Browncoat perspective, the big recent news has come from the California Browncoats regarding their CSTS 2011 screening on 25 June.  In case you have missed this (WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!), not only are Amanda Sullivan and Jessica Neuwirth flying in from Equality Now’s main New York office to thank Browncoats for all our efforts fundraising on their behalf, but Joss Whedon is taking a quick break from shooting “THE AVENGERS” to also make an appearance at the event.  Tickets are selling quickly, but if you can be there and move quickly enough, you can find all details on the California Browncoats website.

Lastly, UK Nathan Fillions fans?  Still not seen the funny (and-still-stands-up-better-than-”Friends”) show “Two Guys And A Girl” co-starring Ryan Reynolds?  Check for listings for the 5* channel, ‘cos they’re repeating it now.  Why this show is still not available on DVD is a complete mystery to me!

Time for catch up!

Wow it’s a very dismal, gray day here in Blighty, so let’s try to brighten things up with one of my marathon catch up posts!

First off, is the sad news that NBC cancelled “The Cape” which starred Summer Glau.  The rumblings really started when NBC reduced their episode order, but unfortunately this is the way of television.  But, Summer made a film called “The Legend of Hell’s Gate” which is a western and it’s having it’s premiere at the Dallas International Film Festival which takes place 31 March to 10 April and it is also screening as part of the Newport Beach Film Festival 28 April to 5 May.  If any of our readers/listeners make it to one of the screenings, you must let us know what you think of it.

I’d like to think that our ongoing “moreseanmaher” hashtag is having a remarkable effect, but I know that the reality is that it is Sean’s talent that has landed him a role in a new pilot, “Playboy”.  This is going to be set in the Playboy club in Chicago in 1963 and will follow “Nick Dalton” (Eddie Cibrian, “Third Watch”) as a local attorney, club keyholder and “fixer who knows how to make problems disappear, he also has mysterious ties to the mob.”  No knowledge on Sean’s role, but Deadline Hollywood said that the role would be “recurring”.  If you do not do so already, please follow Sean on Twitter (@sean_m_maher).  Also, Sean (along with Mark Sheppard) are currently scheduled to be attending the London Film and Comic Con 8-10 July at London’s Earls Court.

Continuing with his reputation as one never to let the grass grow under his feet, Alan Tudyk has two films being shown at US film festivals between now and the end of April.  First up is “Conception” about 9 couples trying to conceive:

This premiers at the Palm Beach Film Festival on 25 March at 19:15.  You can find all details at the Palm Beach Film Festival website.

Alan’s next film, “Beautiful Boy” (starring Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) is a drama about a couple who learn that their son has committed murder on  his college campus:

This is also being screened as part of the Dallas International Film Festival.  The website alantudykonline.com reported that this was scheduled for a UK release in early March, if it was then unfortunately it was a “blink-and-you-missed-it” opening.

Lastly, Alan has been cast in the pilot, “Suburgatory” for ABC which will tell the story of a father moving his teenage daughter from Manhattan to her version of purgatory: The Suburbs.  The website, cinemablend.com, is reported as saying that Alan has been cast as a college friend of the father who has lived in the suburbs for years.

We certainly have our fingers crossed that both pilots are picked up.

If you follow Jewel Staite on Twitter (and why not?!), you cannot fail to acknowledge that when it comes to wine bars and restaurants, she definitely has a nose and tastebuds for all things grape, grain and culinary.  So I’m really pleased to mention her wonderful foodie blog at happyopu.net and apologise for not mentioning it earlier.  Should the various airline taxes ever allow me to scrape up enough cash to find myself in Los Angeles again, I know where I’m checking out restaurant/wine bar recommendations!

If you are a Wash/Zoe-shipper there is a fanlisting group, “Autumn Flower” dedicated to this pairing at strongisfighting.org/washzoe

Wow, er, yeah, been a while …

Yes – it has been a while, so moving on …

As many of you know, I was in the the US in November attending Creation Entertainment’s “Salute to Firefly and Serenity” event.  It was fabulous to catch up with our friends from the SoCal Browncoats, Austin Browncoats, QMx, KNTR and “Browncoats: Redemption”.  I can assure you that there was much conversation and merry-making.

The day I returned to the UK, it was the Starfury event, “Cylon Attack” at Heathrow (how handy!) which included Morena Baccarin, Jonathan Woodward and Sean Maher (returning to the UK after an absence of 3 years!) as guests.  Odile also attended “Cylon Attack”, she and I recorded our next two forthcoming shows there and I’m going to write about both conventions in a separate entry.

I know that this is late news, but the Producers Guild of America announced in late November that Joss Whedon is the latest recipient of their Vanguard Award.  This award recognizes achievements in new media and technology and will be presented at the Guild’s annual awards ceremony on 24 January 2010.  Joss is in more than excellent company with this award as past recipients include George Lucas, James Cameron and John Lasseter to name just three.

Also in November, we were contacted by a new listener, Michael Hudson, who told us about a new audio drama called “Miranda: A Survivor’s Story”.  Unfortunately, since coming back from the US, I’ve been so busy I haven’t had an opportunity to listen to it yet, but as I have been very overdue in sharing this, please go to their website here to listen.

Prior to the conventions, Martin Firrell exhibited his long-awaited “H E R O” which featured Nathan Fillion in early November.  For all who couldn’t travel to London to see it, Martin has posted two pieces on YouTube (here and here).  The work was exhibited at the Guards Chapel, Wellington Barracks in central London and was made more poignant that particular week due to the deaths of British serviceman, one of whom was stationed at the barracks.

Lastly and I make no apologies for this being completely un-”Firefly/SERENITY” related – there is going to be a feature film of classic British SF TV series, “UFO”.  For those of you not in the know, “UFO” was the first live-action TV series from legendary producer, Gerry Anderson (“Thunderbirds”, “Joe 90″ and “Captain Scarlet” puppet shows).  I’m going to unfurl my flag – I am an unashamed “UFO” fan!  I love this show AND was the subject of my very first 2-page “what I did at the weekend” essay when I was 6, so as you can understand that I have a particular interest in this project.  The film is to be directed by Matthew Gratzner and written by Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek.  It has already been announced that Joshua Jackson has been cast as “Paul Foster” and recent news has Ali Larter in talks for “Virginia Lake” (you want strong female SF characters?  Start watching “UFO”!); no news on casting the lead character, “Ed Straker”.  As always, unfortunately when non-Brits deal with quintessential British TV, one can’t help but feel apprehensive, but it’s happening and we’ll judge when it’s ready.  If this interests you, there’s an interview with Matthew Gratzner here.
