Show 93: The One with Dragons!

Here we are in September!

Wendy had a great time at this year’s DragonCon and thanks everyone she saw there.  If you picked up one of our postcards at the con or was given one, and this is your first time with us; welcome!  Both Odile and I hope you enjoy this show enough to stay with us and check out our previous ones.

We have a content packed show for you all this month.  While at DragonCon, Wendy caught up with the “Firefly” cosplayers, 76th Battalion, headed up by our friend, Scott Akin, just before they took part in the Saturday morning parade.  If you are interested in joining them – they are always looking for newbies, please check out their website, 76thbattalion.dragonfyredawn.com and you can also buy merchandise to help support them.

Of course I couldn’t not let a trip to the con pass without grabbing Michael Doherty and talking to him about his new project, “Z*Con” and what using Kickstarter means to independent projects like this.  If you want to learn more about the project, please go to their website, zconmovie.com to keep up to date with their latest news.

A little while ago, a listener forwarded on a post on http://www.fireflyfans.net regarding Space X and their Dragon spacecraft.  The post was written by Jeff Cunningham and was a very passionate proposition regarding petitioning Space X to name their first manned Dragon vehicle, “Serenity”.  If you wish to read his post, you can here.  I am pleased to say that Jeff and his colleague, Christopher Tobias, spoke with us to talk about this in much greater depth and what can Browncoats do to try to make this a reality.  To find out more about Space X and to keep up to date with their news, please see their website, spacex.com.  Jeff and Christopher have started their own website to support their project, takebackthesky.wordpress.com and you can find the online petition that they refer to, the address for Space X, and all the news regarding their efforts.  You can also follow them on Twitter at @TakeBacktheSky, and also support their Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/SerenityTakeBackTheSky.

If you wish to support this effort, please sign the online petition on their website, and also write (yes, write – pen, paper, postage stamp …) to Elon Musk, the CEO/owner of Space X at the following address:

As always, we hope you will enjoy the show and if you do, you can leave comments here or on our Facebook page or Twitter.

You can find our podcast on itunes, here is a direct link to our page.

If you use iTunes as your podcatcher, please leave us a review.

Of course you can also download the show directly from here!

Show 92: The One Where CSTS Responds

Hello!

Welcome to Show 92!  Wow, Sending A Wave has been around now for almost 6 years and we want to thank you for joining us monthly; we do appreciate your aural support.

So, following on from Wendy’s interview with Martin Firrell regarding his new work, Metascifi (metascifi.com, and you can add your voice to the project via Facebook at facebook.com/metascifi), which will be launched shortly, we now bring you our main show and it’s full to the brim!

Sheilah from the 2012 CSTS Global Committee agreed to speak with us about issues and ideas raised by Brice Staeheli a couple of shows ago and it was lovely to get their perspective as well as an update of how CSTS is progressing this year.

We also welcome Beth Nelson from the Austin Browncoats and QMx back to the show along with Kazia Hodges to talk about their new venture, Geek A Bye Baby, which is a fabulous geek-themed hand made baby clothes and accessories website.  If you are expecting parents or know a geek friend who are expecting, check out their website for some absolutely adorable bibs, blankets, hats, etc.  For those of you attending Dragon*Con in Atlanta at the end of the month, Geek A Bye Baby will also be there!

Wendy is attending Dragon*Con and is looking forward to meeting as many Browncoats as humanely possible.  She does want to be able to arrange a Browncoat meet-up and thinks the Shakespeare Tavern is an ideal place in homage to Joss’s forthcoming “Much Ado About Nothing”.  Wendy arrives on Thursday 30 August and leaves early evening Monday 3 September.

As always, we hope you will enjoy the show and if you do, you can leave comments here or on our Facebook page or Twitter

You can find our podcast on itunes, here is a direct link to our page, and if you like us please make sure you leave us some feedback!

Of course you can also download the show directly from here!

I’d like to thank themarysue.com for first posting this and, I think it’s too lovely not to share.

Kellan and Katie Potts are two Browncoats who met and bonded at Dragon*Con and when they decided to marry, like our friends – the Beeston Browncoats – they did it on their own very distinct and unique fashion.

They have shared their wedding at offbeatbride.com and personally, the shot of the page-boy carrying their rings in a miniature Ark of the Covenant is just plain adorable.

You can read Kellan and Katie’s story here.

We wish Kellan and Katie all best wishes for their live together.

Show 68… The Dragon Con aftermath

Oh yes, aftermath …  In fact D*C feels soooo long ago now.

However, in this show we talk some news including the current TwitChange auction particularly the involvement of Nathan Fillion, Jewel Staite and Jon Huertas .

Odile asks Wendy about her recent Dragon*Con trip and they discuss should Browncoat groups who have obtained charity status in the US be allowed to nominate themselves as a fundraising receipient as part of the CSTS fundraising?

And they interview Audrey Hackett, organizer of 2010′s Browncoat Ball in Charlotte, NC.

As always, got something to say, comment away or head over to the Facebook group.

You can find us on iTunes or listen to us here.

Hope you enjoy the show and see you in a month!

PS: Here is the video Audrey mentioned in her interview :-)

So, what else have we been missing …?

Quite a lot actually, so let’s see if we can’t cover a lot of ground …

Heading up the list is our favourite “Firefly”/”Serenity” artist, Jason Palmer with his new additions to his “Sereni-Tee”: Jayne and “Out To The Black”

These fabulous shirts were available from Jason and his lovely wife, Elena, at San Diego Comic con (hey, fashionably late, remember?!), but I have a sneaking suspicion that one or two will be available at DragonCon next week too.

Our friends over at QMx have also released new t-shirts for our delactation, but also a new “Serenity” maquette – bobble-headed Oaty Fruity Girls:

The biggest news for Sending A Wave is that we are proud to be co-sponsoring the Whedon Universe Saturday night Shindig at Dragon*Con 2010 next week.  Wendy is returning to D*C, so be prepared – you’re wearing something vaguely “Firefly/Serenity”-ish, you might just find a small Brit sticking a recording device under your nose.

Dragon*Con 2009 and news, NEws, NEWS

To paraphrase the late, great Douglas Adams, “Dragon*Con is big.  I mean really big.” In fact the only thing that is missing is a towel and I do think the organizers should consider putting “don’t panic” in large, friendly letters on their pocket guide.

I had such a fabulous time.  My thanks to the crew of The Signal who kindly allowed me to join them for their live show, Andy and the QMx team, PJ Haarsma, Denise Gary and assorted KNTR peeps, the tour-de-force that is Mike Dougherty and the cast and crew of “Browncoats: Redemption”, the Austin Browncoats and for all the Browncoats who wore a costume or t-shirt declaring that our show may be gone, but it isn’t forgotten.

imagesThe first piece of news that I want to mention is quite important.  Many of you have (I’m hoping) been wondering what has been happening with London artist, Martin Firrell’s “Hero” project featuring Nathan Fillion.  Well, quite a lot actually; while Nathan was in London appearing at Collectormania 15 in June, he also did some pick ups with Martin for the piece and there have been additions of authors and serving members of the Queen’s Guards.  The website has been rejuvenated and once more we are being encouraged to help shape the piece by adding to the blog.  Please, go and have a look.

I know that the following is “old” news buuuut, what the heck?  Summer Glau is moving into the “Dollhouse” for the forthcoming season along with Alexis Denisof. Former BSG alumn, Jamie Bamber is featured as a client in one of the early episodes.

Alan Tudyk’s “High Poon” short of “James Gunn’s PG Porn” series is still available on spike.com.  I, personally, have found this series to be very funny with “Helpful Bus” being particularly hilarious.

Gina Torres will be appearing on next season’s “Gossip Girl” as “Vanessa’s mother”.  Let me be completely honest, I have no idea of the significance as I never watch the show, but I do know it’s popular.

As part of the NYC tub-thumping for the near imminent second season of “Castle”, Nathan Fillion will be making an appearance at the NYC Apple Store in SoHo on 18 September where I’m sure many people will be learning about iPhone apps they never dreamed existed.  During the hiatus months, ABC commissioned an actual “Nikki Heat” novel which will also be published in the US shortly and if you are interested the first 3 chapters are available on their website as part of their “Castle” microsite.  I’m not a huge fan of the murder-mystery genre, but I did quite like what I read.  The last time I perused Amazon.co.uk, I’m fairly certain I saw that “Heat Wave” is to be published here in Blighty in January, so maybe that means we finally get to see the show officially at last?

Staying on the Fillion slant; Kids Need To Read have their 2010 calendars for sale on eBay.  Go, support – we all need a calendar.

Neatly segueing but still staying with fundraising: “Browncoats: Redemption”.  Mike and the crew had a panel as part of D*C’s Whedon Track  which was so well attended that about 50 people couldn’t get in.  The teaser trailer was screened twice to much enthusiasm from everyone present.

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter – search for sending a wave.

Almost ultimate seal of approval for Qmx’s Serenity Artisan Replica

C’mon peeps – you know that the ultimate seal of approval would be Joss, but this is one of those “as good as dammit!” moments and the things some people the-kiss-1will do to get a discount …  If you want to see some more photos of Nathan with the model and a short blog, you can find them here.  Also this is a link to Qmx’s “Firefly Ship Works” site where they have been detailing the build of this replica

Andy Gore and Ben Mund unveiled this model at 2008′s “Salute to Serenity” convention and it was pretty fantastic then.  Qmx have now opened their waiting list for those who are interested in this piece and you can find all the info you need here.

But that’s not all on the Qmx front.  They have also now opened their pre-order list on the latest of Adam Levermore-Rich’s “Little Damn Heroes” maquette: Jayne Cobb, complete with his cunning hat and announced the latest of their travel posters.  Phew!

For those of you who couldn’t get to Burbank in 2008 or San Diego for Comic Con, the good news is that Qmx will be at Dragon*Con, Atlanta,  in September and hopefully they will bring Serenity with them.
