BDHs on TV 2012 – 2013

I’ve just been looking back over older blog posts and reread my post about our BDHs on TV for 2011/2012 and thinking about what wasn’t mentioned and how situations change, and what now?

“Chuck” and “The Playboy Club”: when used in any context, “cancelled” is a hugely emotive word, as every Browncoat is aware, but I’m pondering on its use regarding “Chuck”.  I loved this show, watched it from when it started airing in the UK, thought the premise was fun, the cast was excellent, but then it (for me) became bogged down in its own Intersect myth which meant that there was less to do with the Buy More crew which made it less fun.  Personally (and there are going to be a lot of “personally” in this blog!), I think the show was reaching a natural end and at least it reached the magic 100 episodes for it to live on in syndication and I also think that it will be regarded as one of the best-loved series from this time.

“The Playboy Club” marked the return of Sean Maher to our screens.  Personally (told you!), I think that the network made a huge mistake in cancelling this show only after three episodes.  The reason why I say this has less to do with the main story and character emphasis which we were seeing ad infinitum on many other shows, but it was the secondary strands that were making this interesting .  This show was prepared to show the ambitions of a woman of colour to become the first African-American woman to grace the cover of Playboy, and most importantly the gay and lesbian community in Chicago during this time period.   I believe that this show had places to go and things to say, whether or not it would have fulfilled this promise or been renewed at the end of its series is another conversation.

“Castle”/”Suburgatory”: as we know, the network renewed both these shows for another year – I believe for a full season order for each.  I can’t talk about “Suburgatory” as I have still yet to watch any of it and I’m not sure if any UK TV channel has bought it.

“Castle” is, of course, an entirely different story …  Lovely Nathan – knowing that you have continued employment for another year fills me with joy, but we have now hit the awkward era for the show – ah, a dilemma; is this show of interest enough for me to say SPOILER ALERT to our UK readers who are only approaching mid-series four or does everyone know, umm …  Okay, err on the side of caution – we’ve hit a delicate time for the show.  One of the “joys” of “Castle” is that it has, 98% of the time, not tried to be anything it wasn’t.  It remains a relatively light-hearted and “successful” mish-mash of “Jason King”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Remington Steele” and the ubiquitous, “Moonlighting”.  I put the word “successful” in quote marks, because from my interpretation of the Nielsen ratings, it is far from being the “network smash hit” that the fandom wants.  The show has increased its 18 – 49 ratings since its first series, but has levelled out around the 2.3/2.5 mark in its time slot, which makes it nothing more than a solid performer bolstering the network’s overall market share and it cannot stand on its own without the strong lead-in provided by “Dancing With The Stars”.  This is sad, because if ratings were measured by the actual viewing figures, new episodes “Castle” would always be amongst the top 5/6 most watched shows in the US on a Monday night.  The one issue I now have is with the recurring storyline of Beckett’s mother’s murder and how this has expanded from “a street murder” (not implausible!) to a full-grown conspiracy plot which is, at the moment, simply boring and I just can’t understand why creators Rob Bowman and Andrew Marlowe have felt the need to blow this up.  Another niggle I have had this year concerns the petulant behaviour of Richard Castle himself and his relationship with Kate Beckett.  I’m glad that the show has lasted as long as it has, but I also feel that it is coming to a natural close and I can’t help but wonder if the network renewed it more because it has already been sold into syndication and so require the “magic” 100 episodes.  We shall see.

“Homeland”/”The LA Complex”: I have the first series of “Complex” but have still yet to watch it.  However, from Jewel Staite’s tweets, I know that she is hard at work on the second series.  I’m going to be watching this out of curiosity, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I was hooked by “Homeland” and I like Damian Lewis.  I found this to be a powerful drama in the same vein as the Scandinavian/European dramas that we are now being treated to in the UK and is a prime example of how good US TV can be.  I’m pleased that Morena Baccarin is being given the opportunity to show her chops.  I know from Morena’s tweets, production starts shortly on the second series, and I can’t wait to see it.

Just Another Periodical Update …

Know what, I’m going to stop apologising – we’re all busy, right?  We all understand the score, right?

During the past couple of days, the US main TV networks have been announcing their renewals, pick ups and cancellations, so what does that mean for our BDH’s?

As followers of Nathan Fillion’s work and “Castle” fans (“Castillions”) are aware, ABC made the decision to renewal “Castle” for a fifth series in January.  Midweek, last week, Michael Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly, tweeted that it looked like NBC had decided to renew “Chuck” and this was confirmed within forty-eight hours by the network.  They also announced that they were picking up “Playboy”, a drama set around the Chicago Playboy Club in the 60′s in which Sean Maher starred in the pilot and according to Nikki Finke’s “Deadline Hollywood” website, he signed for a recurring role.  Followers of Sean’s Twitter feed (@Sean_M_Maher) will have read that he shot his scenes in Chicago, but no word on whether the show will remain there or relocate back to Los Angeles as “Castle” did.  By Friday, ABC had announced that it was cancelling “V”.

From a Browncoat perspective, the big recent news has come from the California Browncoats regarding their CSTS 2011 screening on 25 June.  In case you have missed this (WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!), not only are Amanda Sullivan and Jessica Neuwirth flying in from Equality Now’s main New York office to thank Browncoats for all our efforts fundraising on their behalf, but Joss Whedon is taking a quick break from shooting “THE AVENGERS” to also make an appearance at the event.  Tickets are selling quickly, but if you can be there and move quickly enough, you can find all details on the California Browncoats website.

Lastly, UK Nathan Fillions fans?  Still not seen the funny (and-still-stands-up-better-than-”Friends”) show “Two Guys And A Girl” co-starring Ryan Reynolds?  Check for listings for the 5* channel, ‘cos they’re repeating it now.  Why this show is still not available on DVD is a complete mystery to me!

So, yeah, sorta off the radar

Yes, it’s been a while; so where have we all been?  The summer is always a busy time for Odile as she is a teacher and the end of the UK school year is when we in the UK sit state education examinations and Odile is amongst the small army of teachers who mark the papers, etc. Andrew and I started new roles within our respective workplaces and for both of us that is meaning new responsibilities and – for the time being – longer working hours.  And of course, if you have been keeping up to date with the show and also follow us on Twitter, you will also know that I had surgery a couple of months ago.

During my recovery and slightly before it, I spoke with Andrew Slack of The Harry Potter Alliance about the wonderful fundraising work that the Harry Potter fandom does and how fandoms can work together for charity fundraising.  It’s a great conversation and I’m sorry that we have sat on it for so long, but it happened during the start of CSTS and we felt it best to focus on CSTS.  Then I was able to speak with Mark James for all the latest on his fan film, “Bellflower” and finally, I spoke with Troy and Laura about their ongoing, “Into The Black” film.  All of those will be coming up this month and into September.

We held our CSTS Affiliate screening on 10 July where we were one of the lucky ones to also see the rough cut “Redemption”.  It was a glorious day and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Odile for throwing open her house of this and thanks to everyone who attended.  It was great to see you all.  One of the highlights of the day, was being able to hook up with Mike Dougherty and Heather Fagin from their table at the convention they were attending in the States!  Huge thanks to Mike and Heather for doing that – Skype, we salute you!

What’s next?  Wendy is attending DragonCon next month, so is looking forward to seeing all The Signal team (yes Kari, Crunchies!), attending the “Redemption” premiere on Saturday night, seeing our friends at QMx, the Saturday parade and all fellow Browncoats – so, if you are wearing something “Firefly”/”SERENITY” related, I may stop you for a chat.  If you are attending D*C, be sure to listen to our next show as we will have a fabulous announcement regarding the Saturday night Whedonverse track Shindig.

Other news:

Massive Events’s “HalloWhedon” convention in the UK announced the addition of Jewel Staite to their guest list.  If you wish to learn more about this event, please visit their website here.  Always pleased to have her in the UK.

Alan Tudyk has a role in the next “TRANSFORMERS” film currently in production.  In a recent chat with the “From Hollywood With Luv” blog, Alan spoke about his character in the film and also another production he is in called “Beautiful Boy” with Maria Bello and Michael Sheen and you can read that here.  And if you have yet to view the “DALE AND TUCKER VS EVIL” trailer – what the heck are you waiting for?!

If you were amongst the 120k (give or take a couple …) attending 2010′s San Diego Comic Con, then you were positively falling over our BDH’s!  Nathan Fillion was part of the panel for James Gunn’s “SUPER” and “Castle” panels, inadvertently signed up for a sequel during an interview, signed at the SoCal Browncoats table along with P J Haarsma and also found time to gatecrash the Joss Whedon Experience Q & A.  Ron Glass, along with “Firefly” scribes Jose Molina and Jane Espenson signed at the QMx table.  Adam Baldwin formed part of the “Chuck” panel along with his fellow cast members, Morena Baccarin was there for “V” and Summer Glau was tubthumping her new series, “The Cape”.  And of course, our Great Bird of the Verse, Joss Whedon was in attendance hosting his very own “Experience”, forming a double-act with J J Abrams for the EW’s “Visionaries” panel and finally confirming what must have become one of the worst kept “secrets” in Hollywood, that he was directing the upcoming “AVENGERS”. PHEW!

I spent the day at London’s very own comic con at Earl’s Court on 18 July and amongst the tables and dealers, found Cooler Walls really taking my attention, bumped into old friends Steve and Naomi at the Firefly Store who are still going strong!

As many of you are also aware, Nathan Fillion has also been part of the ongoing “Read” campaign for the American Libraries Association which you can read about here and also buy the poster here for $16.

Lastly, if the sound of a Pete Carpenter/Mike Post tv theme brings a smile of fond memories, then this is for you!  About six or so weeks ago, the lads over at i09.com had some time on their hands and, as everyone knows idle minds are the Devil’s playground, but on this occasion produced something totally fabulous – a rejigged 80′s style “Firefly” credit title sequence complete with Carpenter/Post-style theme.

Right, we’re recording today, so time to sign off.

“Chuck”!!

Courtesy of my overnight (GMT) headlines email from Variety brings forth the fabulous news that “Chuck” has had another 6 episodes added to it’s renewal order from NBC.

The second series has almost finished in Blighty and it has been great to see the show grow.  For those of you not in the know, Yvonne Strahovski has been added to the guest lineup at Starfury’s “T2″ convention in 2010 where she joins returning guests Zach Levi and Adam Baldwin.

Twitter followers of Nathan Fillion could not have missed him confirming his “Firefly” Easter egg on the recent “Vampire Weekend” episode of “Castle”.  Wish I could tell you what I thought of the episode, but then I’d be incriminating myself …  Also if you haven’t found it yet, “Castle” has a fan podcast called “Castlecast” and it’s available via iTunes.

Ending on a slightly highbrow note, in another Twitter message yesterday, Nathan also confirmed that he will be attending Martin Firrell’s “HE R O” on 6th November in London.  The work will be on show to the public 4th to 11th November (UK’s Rememberance Day) at the Guards Chapel, Birdcage Walk in Central London.  You can find out more information from the work’s website – we have a link on the right.

Congratulations! It’s a browncoat.

Further to my earlier post regarding the next episode of “Castle”, ABC.com has posted a slightly longer preview online which shows something we thought we would never see again – Nathan Fillion donning Mal Reynolds’s now iconic coat in clear and unadulterated definition.  I know that this footage is all over the interweb but it is genuinely a pleasure to post it here also -

Also, Dave and the lads over at The Correctness blog have posted an “open letter” to Joss blog regarding “Dollhouse” and remaining part of the Fox network.  It’s not everyone’s cup-of-tea, but I liked it.  If you wish to read it, please go here.  Remember that this is the opinion of The Correctness team and so any comments should be left for them on their site.

Hey! That’s a familiar looking coat!

I’m sure that most Browncoats haven’t failed to be aware that it looks like Richard Castle is about to wear a most familiar piece of clothing as once worn by his real-life alterego.

For those of us not in the US, the power of YouTube brings us the 30 second promo for the next episode of “Castle” entitled “Vampire Weekend, and oh yeah …!

ABC starts to promote “Castle” season 2 and Tim Minear runs with Tenctonese

Personally, I’m not totally sure if this is the right place for this, but it certainly made me laugh this afternoon.

My daily news email from The Hollywood Reporter threw this rather fun tidbit for all of us who enjoyed watching the first season of “Castle”:

Mystery novel tie-in set for second season of ABC series

By James Hibberd

June 30, 2009, 11:00 PM ET

As networks brainstorm dizzying high-tech ways to promote shows online and via social networks, ABC is adopting a decidedly retro medium to excite viewers for the upcoming second season of “Castle”: a book.

Because the show’s protagonist, Richard Castle, is a best-selling author of mysteries, what more appropriate tie-in than to publish an actual mystery novel written by the character?

Starting Aug. 10, the first chapter of a novel titled “Heat Wave,” credited to Richard Castle, will debut on ABC.com as a round of on-air repeats lead up to the Season 2 premiere in late September.

The network will post the first half of the book, a chapter a week, for 10 weeks. The full novel will be published Sept. 29 by Disney sister company Hyperion. The story apparently is a stand-alone mystery with cross-over elements to the on-screen story.

The network teamed with Hyperion for 2006′s “Lost” tie-in “Bad Twin” and “The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer,” which tied in to the ABC miniseries “Rose Red.” Both sold quite well. The real author of “Heat Wave” is not being unveiled.”

Any of you who regularly read fan fiction from fanfiction.net, know that there is now an amount of “Castle” fan fic there and one author has been also posting fiction on the official “Castle” forum on ABC.com.
Variety has also reported that Tim Minear will also be working on a new “Alien Nation” project for the Sci Fi Channel (soon to be SyFy or as the Farpoint Media alum have dubbed it “Syphillis Channel”).  Regular listeners to the show know that “Alien Nation” is a favourite of mine and Andrew’s.  If you have never seen the TV show, check it out as original producer, Kenneth Johnson, created a particularly rich universe.  I have every confidence that Mr Minear will equal the standard set.

Networks announce 2009 – 2010 schedules

Over the last few days, the networks have been presenting their 2009 – 2010 schedules and now we have the good news regarding the return of  ”Dollhouse”, “Castle” and “Chuck” – what changes are in store for them?

According to Variety, nothing.  All stay in the same:

“Dollhouse” – Fridays at 21:00

“Castle” – Mondays at 22:00

“Chuck” – Mondays at 20:00

No word as yet to the scheduling of the new “V” series, but as listeners know that the original “V” miniseries and subsequent TV series continue to be a favourite of ours, you can be sure that the moment anything gets announced, we’ll be talking about it.  Incidently, the ubiquitous ACIN recently posted a review of the pilot episode which you can read here.

Good News Sunday and The Bellflower

Dearly beloved, we gather here today to witness the renewal of US TV shows; to bask in the glory that is the correct decisions by the US networks:

Fox has renewed “Dollhouse”.  UK’s Sci-Fi Channel begins to air this week (if memory serves Tuesday 19 May) so program your hard drive recorders and Sky+ boxes.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that ABC has renewed “Castle”.  However, before we open that second bottle of champagne, the network has not officially confirmed this and will not be doing so until Tuesday, when it formally announces it’s Autumn schedule.

ABC has c0nfirmed that the “V” remake/re-imagining/re-whatever has had it’s initial episode order increased to the basic 13.

Lastly, our friends at The Bellflower have both revamped their website and also have space on QMx’s “Shipworks” area.  If you haven’t found either of these, they are very much worth checking out.
